What is an ECG?

An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a medical test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. The electrical signals generated by the heart during each heartbeat are recorded and displayed as a graph.

An ECG is typically performed using electrodes placed on the chest, arms, and legs of a patient. These electrodes detect the electrical signals produced by the heart, which are then amplified and recorded by a machine. The resulting graph, called an electrocardiogram, shows the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time.

The ECG provides important information about the heart's rhythm, rate, and overall function. It can help diagnose various heart conditions, such as arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms), heart attacks, and problems with the heart's conduction system. It is a commonly used tool in cardiology and is often one of the first tests performed when evaluating a patient with suspected heart problems.

The interpretation of an ECG requires specialized knowledge and training, and it is typically done by healthcare professionals, such as doctors or cardiologists. They analyze the patterns, intervals, and other characteristics of the ECG to make a diagnosis or to assess the heart's health.

About our ECG Awareness Level 3 (VTQ) Training Course

This course emphasises the importance of having realistic expectations and a solid foundation in order to learn effectively. It acknowledges that becoming a leading cardiologist cannot be achieved solely through this course. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are challenging and require dedicated effort, similar to learning a new language.

In this course you are encouraged to take your time, take breaks, and review videos as needed for better comprehension. Understanding the basics of heart anatomy is crucial for comprehending ECGs and their significance.

Instead of jumping into complex 12-lead ECGs, this course starts with basic ECGs and gradually introduces different rhythms and abnormalities. The ability to recognise a normal ECG is as important as identifying any potential issues encountered.
